Where should I post video on Instagram? Reels, Stories, Feed?

Instagram is constantly changing and updating so when it comes to video marketing on Instagram, where exactly should you be posting? There are a few types of videos and they are Reels, Stories, IGTV, Feed and Live. In my opinion, one form of video isn’t more effective than the other. But where do you start?

I hate the word “should.” Because “should” suggests a demand, like something everyone should be doing. It screams popularity to me and don’t forget that social media is not a popularity contest. Each brand has different audiences, demographics, and dream clients. Therefore, social media isn’t identical for everyone so try not to put

pressure on yourself. Here are 3 things to think about when it comes to video marketing on Instagram.

Starting Point

Where does your dream client hang out? This is the first place that people should start when it comes to any form of video. Instagram has Stories, IGTV, Reels, and the Feed. Also, remember that Instagram is owned by Facebook and half of its users are on that platform as well. Consider creating a universal video that can be repurposed and used across multiple platforms. Video repurposing is key because it could take seven or more times for someone to understand and truly receive your message.

Plan on creating a video that serves your audience, like a tip, trick, frequently asked question (FAQ), or ask me anything (AMA) that can be posted to IGTV on Instagram. These types of videos should be around 90 seconds to under three minutes. Then, you can share that video to Stories with a swipe and summarize it in 15 to 30 second Reels. Confused? Well, this leads into my next question. Let’s keep going.

Put Me in Coach

How comfortable are you with video? If you have never shown your face on video, I usually start with the Instagram & Facebook Stories feature. Why? These particular videos have a time limit and disappear in exactly 24 hours. There are face filters you can use if you’re camera shy. This feature on Instagram was a game changer for me when it first came out. Instagram Stories not only helped me gain confidence in sharing my life but also sharing tips, standing out, and staying top of mind. For clients that I coach who are video shy, this is where I direct them to.

Once you begin to feel comfortable and master the Stories feature on Instagram, you will also feel a little more confident about other video types on IG and the additional social media platforms. It is not about mastering video over a few short days or jumping on the latest trends. The goal here is the confidence on video.

Instagram Video Tips:

-  Promote that video via IGTV and send it to the feed.

-  Repurpose for Stories.

-  Go live with a friend and talk about the topic.

-  Make several Reels about the topic!

Plan it Out

Now that you've become more confident on video, let’s take a holistic approach. Create a content plan! Instead of spending a day batching Reels, sit down and think about how to cater to your dream clients. Next, chart out a 12 week plan. The topic of the video is more important than the platform it’s uploaded on.

I would suggest starting with batch recording longer videos that can be used on your other social media platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Don’t just focus on Instagram, the additional platforms need love too. Finally, do NOT forget to put this content on your website with your search keywords.

Action Steps: First, determine the right video path for your brand that leads back to your website! Then, repurpose not to only Instagram but to the other social media platforms as well.
