Digital strategists, like myself, are always throwing around the word “content” like you understand what we’re talking about. Sometimes, content could be what you curate for social media and then content can also mean pertaining to your website. But for today, we will be touching on website content and the 3 pages that will give you the best results on your site.
Just Do It
I’ve coached many business owners who are stuck on what exactly to put on their website when they’re first building it. Feeling paralyzed because they think the whole website needs to be all finished before the launch. Spoiler alert: It doesn’t have to be!
The first website page that you should work on is your products and/or services page. In the beginning, this can be a simple list with short descriptions of your services! Eventually, you will and can expand each service and/or product to it’s own page but for launch purposes, just simplify it.
Required on this page: Your contact information. I still can’t believe that I have to remind you of this but many actually forget this step and it’s a very important CTA (call-to-action).
Bonus: Client testimonials, if you have them. For those just starting out, you may not have this. Add this to your to-do list later.
Share Your Story
The next page to work on is your about me or about us page. Talk about your experience, why you do what you do, how you got started, what you enjoy helping your dream clients do, and sprinkle in a few tidbits about your life. Revisit this page quarterly to make sure that it’s up to date.
Required on this page: Photos of yourself. In fact, your homepage also needs to include a photo of yourself. I won a consulting contract because I was the only vendor who had photos of myself across the website. Your future clients/customers need to know who they’ll be working with.
Bonus: Add a video about yourself to the bottom of the page to help Google on-page time and your Google rankings. This could be as easy as opening up the camera, recording something about yourself that’s under 2 minutes. My page includes a speaking presentation I did in 2010 called “Vacationing Nebraska Style” in which I spend 5 minutes convincing you why you need to stop by the Cornhusker State.
1-800-Don’t Forget The Contact Info
I briefly mentioned this above but make it CLEAR on how someone can contact your business by adding a contact page to your navigation. Each week, I see at least one website that doesn’t make it clear on how to contact them and this is where you can lose clients. Make sure this is on your main navigation of your website.
On this page, include a contact form OR just your email address and phone number. If you’re using a contact form, test it out before you make it public. I had a coaching client whose contact form didn’t work correctly and it was losing business.
Required on this page: Make sure this page is highlighted on your services and about page.
Bonus: Add a calendaring system so someone can easily book a time to chat with you. Calendly offers a free program that will book calls in 15 minute increments.
Ok, where will you start when it comes to your company’s website?
