3 steps to telling & sharing your story

Many of us cringe when we are asked to talk about ourselves and our businesses but what if I told you that this is an important key to your digital presence to move people to want to work with you?

I remember taking a course from a popular, well-known influencer who had suggested business owners introduce themselves or talk about their business regularly. In addition to this, they offered an unoriginal generic script that over the next two weeks, I saw everywhere.

Sure, it’s a good start but let’s get down to what specifics will draw people in to work with you.

First Question: What event occurred in your life that led you down this path to help others?

Now, this is where you can talk about circumstances around how you came to be who you are today. Block 5-10 minutes to really think about this. There could be several circumstances over the years that lead you to why you do what you do!

My Example: When I was young, I wanted to be in TV news. I started an internship and was told that I didn’t have the look for television and that I would be better behind the scenes. I held onto that comment for so many years in all the jobs I worked for .. so I stayed behind the scenes. Then, fast forward to starting my own business,

I had so many hang-ups around being in front of the camera and showing photos that I shoved aside and once I did, things started to move for me. Suddenly, a light bulb came on and showed me that not only can I help myself, but I can help others stand out, too.

Second Question: What did that experience teach you about yourself or the business that you started?

What was the big 180 that changed your circumstances?  Block 5-10 minutes to think about this because there could be several circumstances that got you there.

My Example: I stopped and started my business several times because I was scared that I’d fail. I then went on to go work for businesses and continue the cycle of being unhappy in my career. Turns out, I was fired from my job and a past employer reached out to me and encouraged me to start a business. Along the way, I received signs that it was time to make things happen on my own, as a digital marketing entrepreneur. I wasn’t gaining any traction or clients until a friend suggested that I “put myself out there” on video. Once I spent time creating a plan, weekly videos were posted around the topics my audience was asking about. After a couple of months of consistency, businesses began to reach out to work with me.

Third Question: How does your story solve a problem for your audience?

It’s time to loop back around to your WHY. Block 5-10 minutes to think about this.

My Example: The light bulb that lit up in my head once people began to reach out when I was struggling with putting myself out there, talking, and educating business owners about what I do but there were others, too. That’s why I developed coaching programs that took the overwhelm out of digital marketing and social media.

So… Of the questions above, where do you struggle the most with sharing your story?
