How I got started using video marketing

If you’ve seen me speak, you know that I have a broadcasting degree that I barely have used. Today’s tip is going to be about how I got started and an action step for you to take to get going with using video in your marketing.

It was this month three years ago, that I started posting a tip each Tuesday on social media. My friend and I were talking over drinks about how no one in our area was posting weekly marketing tips on social media, specifically LinkedIn.

I sat for several months wanting to post video content, but I was afraid to put myself out there, wondering what people thought. I could totally go on with the excuses.

The irony of that feeling is I have a broadcasting degree and I’m trained in the editorial and tech of producing videos. I even have all the right tools and lighting to do so. But I sat there -- afraid.

Why was I afraid? I was told on my first day at an internship several months from graduating (in 1996) that I didn’t have the look for TV. And I held onto that fear for 20 years.

Did it stop me from working in broadcasting? No, I ended working as a news producer for 9 months after graduating from college and then switched to Internet Marketing.

After sitting several months on a list of ideas, I decided to grab my phone, record a video, and talk about hashtags on Instagram (here is the link to that video). DONE was better than perfect.

There wasn’t going to be a perfect time, a perfect hair day, or the perfect topic. I simply had to take the leap off the edge, record that video, and make it happen.

Each week, I committed to making a 60-second video tip and posted it to all my social platforms .. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Sometimes I’d batch record the video the week before and sometimes, I’d record the video on Tuesday morning.

A couple of months after posting, I’d see friends at networking events and they’d say they LOVED my videos, and some even sent business my way.

Video is a great way to stay top of mind, stand out, and be inspiring through education.

If you’re ready to stand out on video, I have a video bootcamp challenge coming in February. The bootcamp is designed for all levels -- beginners to pro. It will give you the basics to get started, the tools you’ll need, content ideas to reach your audience, and the direction on which platforms you’ll need to be on to be the authority in your industry.
